男孩瑞奈跟着单身妈妈住在斯德哥尔摩。这年夏天，妈妈要到乌德瓦拉度假。本该去儿童岛夏令营过暑假的瑞奈却在半路擅自改变决定返回家中。他时常佯装从儿童岛给妈妈写信，谎编了一些儿童岛上的活动告诉妈妈。瑞奈觉得这是他进入青春期的最后一个夏天了，因此他要利用这次暑假弄明白生活究竟是怎么回事，人死后还会发生些什么，上帝是否存在，小天使为什么会飞等问题。
本片通过描述一个儿童在暑假的心里活动，反映了父母离异对孩子所带来的不良后果。影片在瑞典公映后好评如潮，片中出现的一些场景带有很强的真实感，都是瑞典人所熟悉的不良青年聚集和犯罪的地方。有些人认为影片具有诱惑人们犯罪的危险性，对观众会产生不良作用，对儿童的成长是很不利，似乎有必要限定分级观看。
